The Emporia State soccer team sustained pressure but fell 3-2 to Rockhurst at the ESU Pitch on Wednesday. In a game that was delayed by an hour due to heat, both offense came out hot with Ava Huston notching her second goal of the season on a Megan Kephart assist less than two minutes into the match, but the Hawks answered less than a minute later and took the lead on a score before five minutes had elapsed in the match. RockU continued the pressure for a 3-1 lead before Ella Favot stopped the bleeding with less than six minutes to play before halftime on a dish by Hailey Gancarz. Neither team scored in the second half. ESU outshot Rockhurst 22-10 and 16-6 in shots on goal, but Rockhurst registered 14 saves and the Lady Hornets only got three. For head coach Jane Grimley-Gunn, it was a wakeup call the Lady Hornets needed.
ESU (1-1-1) plays next on Saturday at Southwestern Oklahoma State. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
