The ongoing heat wave will be sticking around through the upcoming holiday weekend and into the middle of next week.
The National Weather Service is anticipating “dangerously hot conditions” to remain through this coming Tuesday, including heat indexes up to 108 at times. As such, Lyon, Coffey, Osage, Morris and Wabaunsee counties have now been placed into an extreme heat warning through 7 pm Tuesday.
This comes on top of a heat advisory that was issued for the entire area through 9 pm Saturday.

Hot weather is expected to continue through the Labor Day weekend and into the middle of next week.
The National Weather Service has extended the heat advisory now in place and now has it expiring at 9 pm Saturday for all area counties. Air temperatures will be at or near 100 degrees and heat index readings will be anywhere from 101-105. Wet-bulb temperatures, used by schools to determine whether practices and games can go on as scheduled or need adjustments for athlete safety, will be in the 85-88 degree range, meaning orange- or red- level adjustments. For orange, practices are limited to 2 hours, with at least 4 separate rest breaks per hour and rapid cooling methods on hand. For red, practices and other outdoor activities should be delayed or rescheduled. Practices should also be shortened to 1 hour maximum with 20 minutes of rest breaks through the hour.
Wednesday’s high temperature in Emporia was 101 with a peak heat index of 103. It’s the 5th straight day of air temperatures at or above 100 degrees.
