Anytime is a good time to visit your local library, but the month of September is putting an extra emphasis on libraries and all they have to offer.
This past week, the Emporia City Commission presented a proclamation recognizing September as National Library Card Sign-Up Month to Emporia Public Library Director Pauline Stacchini. During the presentation, Stacchini encouraged all residents to go and sign up for their free library card, calling it “A key” to knowledge, information and exploration.
While speaking with KVOE News Friday, Stacchini noted that when it comes to libraries, there are very few “doors” barring individuals from accessing information, as all services and materials are available to them at no cost. However, noting that individuals often have busy lives and the library has fixed hours, she said that a library card provides you access to said materials without any restrictions.
As the world continues to become more digital, KVOE News asked Stacchini if a library card is still as important as it was in years past. Stacchini’s response was that while the internet may provide more access to certain materials, it is not complete access and rarely ever free.
Additionally, Stacchini noted there are no requirements for an individual to access a library card, unlike other memberships they may sign up for. She added that when it comes to a library card, those who carry one are doing much more than just opening a door to more possibilities; they’re also serving as “silent advocates” for literacy.
