An animal had to be euthanized and seven individuals transported following a vehicle and buggy collision in Coffey County early Saturday evening.
According to the Coffey County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Fauna Road, just north of 13th Road or roughly 3 miles south of Jacob’s Creek for an injury accident. An investigation revealed that a jeep was northbound in the area, traveling at highway speeds, when it came upon a horse drawn buggy with a family of six – a mother and father and four children.
The driver of the jeep reportedly did not see the buggy and struck it from behind. The mother in the buggy was taken by helicopter from the scene of the accident with “traumatic injuries” while the father and four children were taken by various EMS agencies to other area hospitals with undisclosed injuries.
The driver of the jeep was also taken from the scene by ambulance to a nearby hospital for possible injuries. The horse drawing the buggy suffered injuries “beyond care” and had to be euthanized at the scene of the accident.
No names have been released and the accident remains under investigation. In addition to Coffey County deputies, the Kansas Highway Patrol as well as emergency crews from Burlington, Gridley, New Strawn and Jacobs Creek responded to the scene.
