Recently, President Donald Trump signed executive orders designed to increase protections for the ranching industry.
President Trump’s executive actions have several goals: expanding market access for American producers, promoting fair competition and supporting ranchers in several categories like country of origin labeling and potential predation from animals like gray wolves or Mexican wolves.
Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins says these actions build on the recently-announced Ranchers First initiative and the 2025 USDA Beef Plan with a goal of expanding the smallest domestic herd in 3 generations.
Another new support expands the Strengthening Processing for US Ranchers, or SPUR program, through guaranteed loans.
Echoing recent comments from Kansas Farm Service Agency Director David Schemm, USDA Farm Production and Conservation Under Secretary Richard Fordyce says another support for ranchers is offsetting damages from disasters.
Ranchers First also prioritizes the purchase of locally-grown US beef at the federal and state levels.
Meanwhile, the USDA is looking to help ag producers — farm, ranch or both — with a plan to modernize data collection. Rollins says this follows listening sessions on the need for increased usefulness, accuracy and timeliness.
USDA plans to make the reporting experience easier and faster with less duplication. It also plans to make acreage and yield estimates more accurate.
This will be done while USDA integrates modernized data and technology platforms while protecting privacy and expanding transparency.
