The couple arrested last week on suspicion of animal abuse have been charged and have started the court process.
Matthew Carver, age 44, and Sarah Carver, age 37, are both charged with 31 cases of misdemeanor animal cruelty. The legal complaints say the Carvers failed to provide food, water, “protection from the elements,” exercise and other care.
Charges follow a warrant search involving Emporia Police officers and Animal Control officers at 621 Lakeview Lot 14 on September 2. Ten cats and 31 dogs were removed from the residence.
Pretrial hearings are taking place October 19 in Lyon County District Court.
Prairie Paws Animal Shelter worked with authorities and is caring for the animals. The pets have been adoptable since September 3. Residents can call 620-340-6345 or go online to prairiepaws.org for more information.
