We are officially into All Veterans Tribute Season in the Founding City of Veterans Day following the annual All Veterans Golf Tournament at the Emporia Golf Course.
The event once again drew a strong field of competitors, as it has for the past quarter-century, since local Veteran Jesse Solis started it after a conversation with a fellow veteran.
The 25th anniversary of the golf tournament coincided with the 25th anniversary of 9/11 taking place just a day prior to the national day of remembrance. Solis says he felt it was fitting to have the two events taking place in the same weekend, as both underscored the importance of service and the importance of supporting those who served.
The tournament comes with Veterans Day now two months away in November, a time when the community calendar will, as always, be jam-packed with activities including:
*The Veterans Artist Gallery exhibit goes November 4-14 at the Emporia Arts Center. The annual reception is Nov. 6 at the Arts Center
*Freedom Fest is Nov. 7 at the All Veterans Memorial and Soden’s Grove
*Emporia State’s Salute to Service game is against archrival Washburn on Nov. 7 at Welch Stadium
*The Emporia Municipal Band’s In Their Honor concert is Nov. 8 at the Emporia Granada Theatre
*Veterans Day, Nov. 11, has the annual Veterans Breakfast at Presbyterian Manor, the annual parade on Commercial Street, the annual memorial service at the All Veterans Memorial and the Veterans Luncheon at the American Legion Post 5
