It wasn’t just air traffic staff at the Emporia Municipal Airport was directing Saturday, as there was plenty of foot traffic as well thanks to the annual Wings and Wheels open house event.
The combination aircraft and car show was busy from the start, with hundreds of residents passing through to admire the variety of vehicles, both air and land, on display. New Airport Manager Julian Seaman says, in his opinion, there is no better way to spend a Saturday and the large turnout would indicate there are a lot of individuals who agree with him.
While always a fun and exciting time, this year’s Wings and Wheels was also a bit extra special as it marked the final day of longtime Airport Manager Ken Adams’ career with the City of Emporia, which has spanned more than four decades. Adams says he knew well in advance what day would be his final and says he was very happy with how the schedule played out.
Adams says Wings and Wheels is very important as it allows the citizens of Emporia to experience “Their airport,” something he thinks they should take great pride in. Seaman agreed with this statement, noting the airport is, for many, the first impression they have of our community.
Seaman adds that it is important to make a strong first impression, which he believes the airport does, noting the number of businesses who touchdown on its tarmac.
