Demolition is nearing the halfway point of Newman Regional Health’s Cora Miller Hall — to the point that the building’s name is no longer on the structure.
Demolition began last week after a contract crew handled window removal and asbestos abatement through much of last month. So far, the southern part of the structure has been torn down with the northern, more recognizable half coming down later. Demolition could end within the next 2-3 months.
Demolition starts with the hospital getting ready for its Legacy Reflection and Memory Collection event coming at 1 pm Friday. People are encouraged to attend so they can reflect on the history and impact of the building, share personal stories, view photos and other artifacts and bring their own historical information for upcoming preservation work.
Erected in the early 1970s, the building is getting demolished after serving the hospital and area residents as Emporia State University’s nursing training facility, Maintenance and upkeep concerns, along with the construction of ESU’s Nursing + Student Wellness center on campus, led the hospital’s Board of Trustees to decide to demolish the structure.
