Despite recent rainfall, grass fire activity is still possible — as was evidenced Monday afternoon east of Emporia.
A pair of spot fires developed on Interstate 35 near mile marker 139 shortly before 4 pm — the same general spot where another small fire developed several days earlier. Emporia Fire and Hartford-Neosho Rapids combined to put Monday’s fires out quickly. A cause has not been announced.
Parts of the KVOE listening area have picked up 1.5 to 6 inches or more of rainfall since September 9, but Hartford-Neosho Rapids firefighters say grass conditions can dry out quickly even after rain. Residents are encouraged to be careful with anything that can cause sparks and to be careful with smoking materials.
