Horse racing is about to return to Greenwood County.
Eureka Downs is in the final stages of getting ready for its official reopening next month. Race dates are October 17-18, 24-25, Halloween and November 1.
Between now and then, the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission will be on site October 5. Training and timed works will take place October 7. Racing and Gaming says there may be a “large influx” of occupation license applicants for the available positions, so it is encouraging interested people to begin the licensing process early. Dates and times are as follows:
*Monday, Oct. 5: 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
*Tuesday, Oct. 6: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
*Wednesday, Oct. 7: 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
*Thursday, Oct. 8: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
*Friday, Oct. 9: 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
*Monday, Oct. 12: 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
*Tuesday, Oct. 13: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
*Wednesday, Oct. 14: 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
*Thursday, Oct. 15: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
*Friday, Oct. 16: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
*Saturday, Oct. 17: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Eureka Downs, 210 North Jefferson, last hosted live racing in 2010 after funding shortages. State grants and tax revenues from Gilley’s Casino in Park City are leading a better than $2 million bottom-to-top makeover to bring horse racing back to Eureka. The goal is to have over 40 race dates by 2028.
The Greenwood County Fair Association is operating Eureka Downs.
