It did require a slight pivot leading in, but the annual Emporia Arts Council Chalk Fest was a rousing success yet again.
Due to rainfall in the forecast throughout the day Saturday, organizers made the last-minute decision to move the event indoors to the Emporia Arts Center from its original location in the downtown corridor. But it did not seem to hurt the turnout, as chalk artists were lined up out the door well before the event officially began, a welcome sight to organizer Sam Russell of the EAC.
Russel says the beauty of any medium of art is that it is flexible and capable of being created anywhere. When it comes to chalk art specifically, Russell says there is a great appeal to the form for several reasons, including that it is equitable to artists of all ages and skill ranges.
She adds it is also a more affordable medium than most.
In addition to residents, the event also saw a pair of featured artists: Kansas City-based chalk and paint illustrator Amy Lynn and Emporia’s own Hannah Worthen, known for her nature-inspired works.
