It took some time to confirm, but there was a gas leak at the Emporia Senior Center on Monday.
Emporia Fire Capt. Wade Schmidt says crews responded to an abnormal odor around 8 am. Kansas Gas was also called to the scene. After an investigation, it was determined there was a small gas leak from an unspecified kitchen appliance. The building was ventilated.
The facility has had to make one schedule adjustment due to the call. Senior Center Director Carla Fessler says there will be no lunch service Monday. Ventilation began shortly after Emporia Fire crews arrived at the center around 8 am. Fessler also says there wouldn’t be enough time to cook and have the food ready for residents by 11 am, so the decision was made to cancel the lunchtime meal.

Emporia firefighters are at the Emporia Senior Center for a potential gas leak.
Fire crews were dispatched around 8 am. At this time, there is currently no confirmation on any gas leak or any potential evacuations. Kansas Gas has been called to the scene.
