Emporia Police officers investigated an accidental shooting incident this past weekend.
Police Capt. Ray Mattas says the call in central Emporia happened around 3 pm. Officers found 22-year-old Christopher Williams with a gunshot wound to his right leg. An ambulance took Williams to Newman Regional Health for treatment. His condition has not been released.
Mattas says Williams was cleaning his gun when it accidentally discharged. Mattas also says a live round had not been removed before the cleaning project began.
Mattas has offered several safety tips for people cleaning firearms:
•Always ensure the firearm is completely unloaded before beginning to clean it.
•Remove all ammunition from the firearm and the immediate area.
•Whenever possible, store or take ammunition into a separate room before cleaning the firearm.
•Treat every firearm as if it is loaded, even when you believe it is unloaded.
•Keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction at all times
