USD 251 North Lyon County is ramping up its community engagement opportunities with significant bond questions on the November 3 ballot.
After holding a tour of Northern Heights High School earlier this month, the district has a public meeting at North Lyon County Elementary/Junior High at 10 am Saturday. USD 251 Together Committee spokesperson Kiley DeDonder says the overall facility plan presented to voters and patrons is a long-term investment in the district’s future, following 3 years of study and community feedback.
The district is proposing 2 bond packages — one at nearly $26 million to replace Northern Heights with a new high school essentially on the NLC campus and another at over $5 million to replace the current athletic campus at Northern Heights with a new complex just north of Americus. If both 30-year bonds are approved by voters, the total levy increase will be 21 mills. If the high school alone is approved, the levy increase is 17 mills. If the bonds don’t pass, DeDonder says patrons will come together to figure out the best path forward and “control the controllables” — but the need for significant renovations to Northern Heights or a new high school don’t go away.
Saturday’s meeting will include comments from Superintendent Bob Blair and the architecture team. There will also be several renderings and information about the project. After Saturday’s public meeting, the district will be back at NLC on October 8 for tours at 5, 5:30 and 6 pm that evening. The community engagement process ends with a public meeting at Northern Heights at 6:30 pm October 28.
