Local community members gathered to support the continuous battle against Alzheimer’s during the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s event in Emporia Saturday. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s event is held to raise awareness and honor those affected while continuing the search for a cure.
The walk at the Lyon County Fairgrounds welcomed supporters, caregivers, families, and also members who are currently living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.
Andrea Stockwell with the Alzheimer’s Association stated the main purpose of the event was a celebration.
Stockwell noted there were lots of events for everyone of all ages.
Stockwell mentioned the Promise Garden, which is made up of four flower colors. Orange represents supporters of the cause, yellow for supporters and caregivers of someone living with Alzheimer’s, purple signifying the loss of a loved one to the disease, and blue representing someone currently living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.
Stockwell shared that all proceeds from the walk will go to research to continue finding a cure for Alzheimer’s and supporting the local community.
The walk’s emcee, Tagan Trahoon, shared why this specific event is close to him.
Trahoon also shared why hosting the walk means so much to him.
The walk had a total of 14 teams and 54 participants this year. Currently, they have raised $17,990 towards the goal of $20,000. To donate online, you can visit www.alzwalkemporia.org. Donations are open until the end of December.
