There’s not much left of Newman Regional Health’s Cora Miller Hall.
Demolition has progressed substantially over the last 3 weeks after beginning with asbestos abatement and window removal in August. As of Monday morning, the only parts of the building left standing were the stairwells at the east and west sides of the structure.
Cora Miller Hall was built in the early 1970s and served as the on-site training facility for the Emporia State School of Nursing. However, the university’s decision to build a Nursing + Student Wellness Center on campus, coupled with significant maintenance and upkeep costs, led the hospital Board of Trustees to approve demolition this past February instead of a renovation.
The building is named for Cora Miller, the hospital’s first superintendent when it was known as Newman Memorial County Hospital.
A schedule for removing demolition debris is pending. Hospital administrators have said they plan to convert the property into green space.
