In less than 2 weeks, Eureka Downs will open its gates to the public.
If you don’t live in Eureka or Greenwood County, that statement may not mean much to you. But the facility is reopening after a 16-year-long shutdown due to funding shortages, with state grants and tax revenues from Gilley’s Casino in Park City helping to fund the restart. Spokesman Mike Weiss, a guest on KVOE’s Morning Show on Tuesday, says there has been a lot of work done to get Eureka Downs ready for racing.
Weiss says race days “will be a festival.”
Weiss told KVOE listeners this will renew an entertainment option for Eureka, but it will also provide an economic boost to the Greenwood County seat.
Race dates this year are October 17-18, 24-25, Halloween and November 1. The goal is to have over 40 race dates on the community calendar within a few years.
