The Emporia City Commission has approved allocating funds to help bring a new event to the community calendar next year.
During their recent study session, commissioners approved the allocation of $28,000 in Transient Guest Tax (TGT) dollars to support bringing an Amateur Junior Golf Association national competition to the community. According to Visit Emporia Director Matt Fowler, who presented the agenda item Wednesday, the AJGA holds regular competitions around the country each year and has been eyeing Emporia for a time now.
Fowler stated that if tournament organizers agree to bring the event to town, the $28,000 would be used to support costs for the staff and officials overseeing the tournament.
Fowler says this is a great use of these dollars, noting the three-day tournaments traditionally see a large turnout of both local, national and international competitors who often spend a week or close to it in each community.
As for when the tournament would take place, should it be granted, Fowler says they are currently looking at either April or August of next year, but no decision has been made.
In other business, commissioners also approved moving their November 18th meeting to Wednesday, November 25th.
During their regular action meeting, commissioners also approved the first year of a four-year service agreement with Duke’s Underground for a sewer inflow and infiltration assessment program. The agreement, according to city leadership during Wednesday’s meeting, will renew on an annual basis unless terminated before the four-year term concludes.
Commissioners also approved a base bid to S.R. Coffman Construction in the amount of $540,958 for stormwater improvements on Commercial Street between 8th and 10th Avenue.
The Emporia City Commission will reconvene for its next regular meeting on Wednesday, October 21 at 11 am inside the Municipal Courtroom at White Auditorium.
