Manhattan struck first with a six-play, all-rushing drive to open the game and take an early lead, 8-0. The Indians never looked back, taking advantage of three turnovers on Emporia’s first three offensive possessions.
Manhattan turned each turnover into a defensive touchdown, returning two fumbles for scores and adding a pick-six to build a commanding 45-0 halftime lead.
The Spartans finally got on the scoreboard midway through the third quarter when Cael Claibourn connected with Garrett LeBlanc on a 23-yard pass. The touchdown ended the shutout, but Manhattan added a late score to close out the 51-6 victory.
Ben Collins led Emporia’s ground game with 59 rushing yards.
The loss drops the Spartans to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in league play. Emporia will look to snap its losing streak next Friday when it returns to Welch Stadium to host Field Kindley.
