Emporia’s Habitat for Humanity is nearing completion on its 28th local build.
In fact, Habitat President Eric Kirby, in a recent interview with KVOE News, stated that for all intents and purposes, the newest home, located in east Emporia at 1602 Lasalle Street, is ready to go with just some minor cosmetic work still needed.
Kirby says Habitat is hopeful they will officially close on the house and have the homeowner, Celinda Moreno, moved in before Thanksgiving. During a recent installment of KVOE’s Talk of Emporia, Moreno joined the program and spoke about what it has meant to be chosen by the organization for this opportunity.
It is important to note that Moreno is not receiving the house for free, as she and her family are responsible for providing 300 hours of “sweat equity” in its construction and will also be responsible for the mortgage and other bills like any owner. However, unlike many first-time homeowners, Moreno says this experience is providing her and her children with more than just a place to live; it has given her invaluable life skills moving forward.
Noting her daughter’s involvement in the construction process, Moreno says the experience has also been enlightening for her children as it, at least with her oldest daughter, has instilled a sense of responsibility and ownership in the home.
Moreno says she and her daughters have often discussed their new home and says they are all equally excited not just to move in, but for all of the firsts that are ahead.
As mentioned, this is the 28th home to be completed by the local Habitat organization and the seventh under Kirby’s leadership. He tells KVOE News they are very proud of the work they have accomplished; however, it is becoming increasingly more challenging in recent years due to a common roadblock.
Kirby says one bright spot has been the support available at the state and federal level when it comes to grant opportunities that assist both the agency and homeowners. Additionally, he says the support and dedication from the local community have helped make a major difference.
Speaking of local support, residents will have the chance to support Habitat for Humanity during the annual Match Day coming up in November, as it is once again one of the more than 30 benefiting organizations involved.
