Did you know rainfall can help you save money?
All you need is a few simple materials and rainwater can help you reduce your use of utility-provided water, meaning a cutdown on your monthly bill, according to David Traylor Zoo Director Brenda Young.
Young’s comments came after she led a rain barrel workshop organized in partnership by the Emporia Natural Resources Advisory Board and David Traylor Zoo Saturday.
During the event, Zoo Director Brenda Young explained to attendees how to craft a rain barrel, which is a device, normally just a barrel or drum, connected to a home’s downspout that collects and stores stormwater runoff for future use. Young explained this is fortuitous for many reasons, including cutting down costs on water usage; however, she did note it is purely for outside chores, not universal use.
During the presentation, residents had their own opportunity to create and take home a barrel of their own thanks to a donation by Smucker’s and Hostess. If you were unable to attend the event, but would still like to put together a barrel of your own, Young says it is a very simple and affordable process depending on the route you take.
In Young’s opinion, if you can purchase a drum, great, but if you can find one that is being tossed out, even better.
If you have questions or would like more information on the subject, Young says you can reach out to her directly by contacting the zoo at 620-341-4365.
