Some details have been released after an incident involving a crash and a brush fire in north Lyon County on Monday.
Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch tells KVOE News Lyon County Deputies and Fire/EMS were called to the 1300 block of US Highway 56, east of Allen, just after 3 pm. Shortly after, fire crews from Allen/Admire, Reading and Miller were called to the same area for a brush fire near structures.
The Kansas Highway Patrol led the investigation into the crash, saying an SUV driven by 49-year-old Andrew Auwarter of Paola (pay-YOH-luh) was westbound on US-56 but was traveling without a tire on its trailer. The SUV left the highway into the north ditch and then went across the road into the south ditch. After that, the SUV hit several road signs and then vaulted over a driveway before coming to a stop.
Auwarter was taken to Stormont-Vail Hospital for suspected serious injuries.
The fire was extinguished quickly and no damage to any structures was reported. Deputies could not confirm if the fire and vehicle accident were related; however, Koelsch says the individual who reported the crash noted there was smoke coming from the vehicle.
