The Emporia High soccer team had its three-match winning streak snapped Tuesday night at Spartan Field, falling 2-0 to Washburn Rural in a lightning-shortened contest.
Washburn Rural took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break before stretching their lead early in the second half. Also early in the second half, EHS defender Ricky Ramos was issued a red card, forcing the Spartans to play short-handed with just 10 men for the remainder of the match.
Despite the setback, the Black and Red battled down the stretch, with head coach Victor Ibarra noting his squad actually played better down a man.
Play was called early with four minutes remaining on the clock after lightning was detected in the area.
The Spartans turn right back around Thursday to host Manhattan in a weather makeup match—their fifth game in just over a week.
With the loss, Emporia falls to 10-3 overall and 1-2 in Centennial League play.
