One person is in custody following a domestic disturbance call in Osage County that resulted in a Special Response Team deployment Tuesday morning.
According to Osage County Sheriff Chris Wells, at approximately 6:36 am Osage County 911 received a call for a welfare check at 1132 Lansing Street in Osage City. Osage City Police officers responded to the scene and determined that a “physical domestic disturbance” had occurred, with a victim later reporting that the suspect had discharged a rifle inside the home.
The suspect then allegedly barricaded himself inside the residence with a two-year-old child, leading Osage City Police to request assistance from the Osage County SRT and evacuate the surrounding area as a precaution. Along with Osage County’s SRT, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Ottawa Police Department STAR Team responded to the scene.
Law enforcement reportedly made efforts to resolve the situation peacefully, but ultimately had to make entry into the home and took the occupant, later identified as 38-year-old Harold F. Chaffin II, into custody without further incident. Chaffin was booked into the Osage County Jail on suspicion of domestic battery, aggravated child endangerment, criminal discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm while under the influence, criminal threat, interference with law enforcement, distribution of marijuana and distribution of drug paraphernalia.
The Sheriff’s office confirmed the child was safely removed from the home and reunited with family members with no apparent injuries. This incident is still under investigation and formal charges are pending at last word.
