The season is over; however, repair work will not be taking a break at Emporia’s Peter Pan Park Splash Pad.
Monday, the City of Emporia announced the splash pad would be closed for the day due to “Mechanical issues,” before a separate announcement Tuesday morning in which the city announced it would be closing the splash pad for the remainder of the season. The reason, as told to KVOE News by City Manager Trey Cocking, was the failure of two starters on the pad’s pump, which was discovered at the start of the week.
Director of Public Lands and Facilities Kevin Hanlin told KVOE News the city did not have replacement parts readily available and had to order the new parts from outside the community. Hanlin says the parts should arrive by next week; however, given the change in weather coming this week, temperatures between the low 70s and upper 60s, Hanlin says they decided to close the splash pad a bit earlier.
Repair work will still take place next week, according to Hanlin, as the city needs the pad operational in order to prepare it for the winter.
This is the second closure due to mechanical issues for the splash pad this season after it had to be closed for roughly a week back in June. Hanlin says the two issues were not directly linked; however, they were adjacent to one another.
Once the parts arrive, Hanlin says the repair project should take roughly half a day, if that, to complete.
