The Emporia High volleyball team celebrated Senior Night in style on Wednesday, earning a triangular sweep over Topeka West and Topeka High at Spartan Gym.
The Lady Spartans set the tone early in the evening, making quick work of Topeka High in a dominant straight-set victory (25-16, 25-18).
However, the second match against Topeka West tested Emporia’s resilience. In the opening set, the Lady Spartans found themselves in an early 6-1 deficit. Refusing to back down, Emporia rallied all the way back to take an 11-10 lead—forcing a Chargers timeout—before closing out the first set 25-17.
Set two followed a similar script, with Emporia digging out of an early 10-4 hole that prompted an EHS timeout. The Lady Spartans regrouped, battled back to take an 18-17 lead, and never looked back, sealing the sweep with a 25-21 set win.
Senior Kaylee DeWitt shared what head coach Ping Wang told the team when they were down early in that final set.
Fellow senior Morgan McCoy, who spent two years with EHS, reflected on how meaningful the evening was.
When looking back on their high school careers, all three seniors pointed to the KU volleyball camp as their favorite shared memory. The third senior on the roster, Aubree Hess, elaborated on why that experience meant so much to the team.
With the sweep, Emporia moves to 17-11 on the season. The Lady Spartans return to action on Saturday when they host the Emporia Tournament.
