Emporia’s Día de los Muertos celebration is coming to the downtown corridor Saturday with some notable changes.
The biggest change will be the timeframe of the event, which has traditionally taken place between the early and late afternoon hours. This year instead, the event will take place in the evening starting at 5 pm, an alteration that Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow President Mike Torres was very excited about during a recent appearance on KVOE’s Morning Show Thursday.
Activities will go through 10 pm Saturday and will also be centered in a slightly different portion of Commercial Street this year on the 600 and 700 blocks of Commercial, a slight move downward from its longtime space in the 800 and 900 blocks. Torres says this move, while slight, provides a lot of great opportunities for not just the event, but several local businesses who will be better highlighted throughout the event.
While some things will change, much will remain the same, including the annual parade down Commercial Street, although that too will be altered slightly, with Torres saying they are planning to move it to the middle of the main event.
Additional activities will include a La Catrina contest, live music, food trucks and more. The event is free to attend and open to the public.
