For the past 10 months, SOS Inc. has been verbalizing its history with the community through a series of events commemorating its 50th anniversary, but the latest has given residents a visual depiction of that history.
Wednesday, the newest exhibit at the Lyon County History Center, honoring the half-century of service by the local agency, opened to the public and was the central focus of the latest Business After Hours event held Thursday evening. History of Hope: 50 Years of SOS details how the agency went from a small grassroots group of volunteers to the multi-issue-focused advocacy agency we know today.
Ahead of the latest Business After Hours event at the History Center, SOS Director Mickey Edwards spoke with KVOE News and explained what visitors will see when they view the exhibit.
Edwards also expressed her amazement at just how much the History Center managed to convey through the “little bit” of archival information they were provided.
Originally, SOS was established to help serve victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and abuse, and today also serves victims of stalking, child abuse, neglect and more, a journey Edwards says is also well depicted throughout the exhibit.
In addition to the evolution of their work, Edwards says the exhibit also does a tremendous job of detailing how we have come to realize just how many individuals are impacted by these various issues regularly.
The exhibit will remain open to the public through the end of October, which is recognized as sexual assault awareness month. For more information, visit SOSKansas.com.
