A change in representation is coming in a Lyon County murder case.
During a hearing in district court Thursday, Alexei Perez-Ricardo submitted a motion for substitution of counsel looking to replace Rand Simmons. The request was approved by Judge Jeffrey Larson and the court will be appointing the new counsel at a later time.
The next hearing in the case will be announced once counsel has been appointed.
This development comes after Perez-Ricardo changed his initial no-contest plea in the case this past summer, asserting self-defense immunity following a fight that resulted in the death of Adolfo Callejo-Viniegra last year. Perez-Ricardo says Callejo-Viniegra hit him in the head with a freshly opened beer can as part of the argument. Perez-Ricardo says he pulled out a pocket knife and poked at Callejo-Viniegra once, cutting the victim on the arm.
