The #12 Emporia State volleyball team survived a slow start on the way to sweeping Newman 25-22, 26-24, 25-10 at White Auditorium in Emporia Thursday night. NU didn’t have a kill in the first 14 points of the match as and was forced to call a timeout down 9-5, but the Jets showed fight after that going on a 6-1 run to cut the ESU lead 16-14 forcing an E-State timeout. The Navy & Red kept it close for the rest of the frame but never drew even. The Jets were in control throughout much of the second set, but the Lady Hornets picked up blocks on three-straight points to take the lead and eventually escaped with a 2-0 lead following a 4-1 run to end the frame. The Jets ran out of fuel in the third as the Lady Hornets flew out to a 7-1 lead in the set and were never challenged. Piper Bahr led ESU with 12 kills and hit a blistering .340 in the match. Maja Ciosek added seven and had one of the blocks to swing the momentum late in the second set.
Head coach Ken Murczek was disappointed in the start and his team’s serve receive as the Jets aced ESU seven times.
ESU (23-3, 8-2 MIAA) wraps up the regular season with two more games at home beginning with Senior Day Friday, November 6 against Northwest Missouri.
