Emporia High football is set to host their first postseason game this decade as they welcome Hutchinson to Welch Stadium on Friday night for the first round of the Class 5A West playoffs.
The Spartans earned the No. 8 seed after wrapping up a 4-4 regular season, riding momentum from a two-game winning streak that includes last week’s thrilling 24-22 Senior Night victory over Topeka High. They face the No. 9-seeded Salthawks, who are 3-5. They boast their own two-game winning streak after topping Valley Center 32-18 in their finale.
Friday’s matchup marks a rematch of last fall’s first-round battle, which Hutchinson won 34-0. However, Emporia head coach Daniel Goodman emphasizes that a lot has changed over the past year.
The 2026 campaign has been a historic turnaround for the Black and Red, bringing playoff football back to Welch Stadium for the first time since 2019. Goodman reflects on what his team has accomplished in his second year at the helm.
Offensive production will be key for Emporia, the Spartans own a 4-1 record this season when scoring more than two touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Cael Claibourn is hopeful the offense can deliver the big plays needed to keep their postseason run going.
Kickoff is set for Friday night at Welch Stadium. Coverage begins with the RV Doc pregame show at 6:45 PM on AM 1400 and 96.9 FM KVOE.
