House of Morrow hosted its second annual Drag is Art fundraiser over the weekend.
Complete with whimsical costumes, spooktacular musical numbers and special performances from Emporia native and season 16 contestant of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Q, House of Morrow’s director, Deon Morrow, said the event went better than anticipated.
Friday night’s event saw Good Way Gardens’ event space packed with community members who enjoyed performances by local drag artists while donating to the work House of Morrow does to serve marginalized communities in Emporia.
As an Emporia native, Q said coming back to her hometown to host performances like Drag is Art feels incredibly fulfilling, especially considering the lack of representation the performer felt as a child.
When she thinks about the work she and other drag performers do, Q said it’s more than just playing music and collecting tips. For Q, drag really is an art– one that combines her many passions so she can be fully self-expressed.
