Election Day 2026 is here and already off to a fast start in Lyon County.
According to an update from Election Officer Amie Jones at 9 am, two hours after polls opened, 20 percent of the county’s registered voters have cast their ballots. Jones says over 1,200 ballots were cast in the first two hours of election day and is anticipating the number to grow steadily as the day goes on.
Just ahead of the polls opening, the county’s turnout, between in-person advance voting and mail-in ballots, was at 17 percent, a number that Jones says was surprising, yet exciting to see Monday.
Jones had originally hoped for a voter turnout around 75 percent or higher by the end of election day at the start of advance voting three weeks ago. Looking at the advance turnout Monday, she says that may not be attainable, but she is very confident they will see a turnout far above the last gubernatorial general election, which was just under 50 percent.
Polls are open until 7 pm and while the three-day grace period is still technically in effect, Jones and other officials are still encouraging residents not to rely on it and to make sure they get their ballot turned in either through the county’s drop box or at their respective polling site by the end of the election Tuesday. Once the polls close, KVOE News will have live election night coverage, including returns and reactions on KVOE 1400 am, 96.9 FM and KVOE.com.
