The Olpe Eagles continued their postseason run Friday night with a convincing 35-0 victory over the Wabaunsee Chargers in a Regional 1A playoff matchup. The Eagles improved to 8-2 on the season with the shutout win, while Wabaunsee finished its season at 4-6.
The matchup was a rematch of the teams’ Week 2 meeting, when Olpe came away with a 35-14 victory. This time, the Eagles left little doubt, controlling the game on both sides of the ball and holding the Chargers to just 82 yards of total offense. Head coach Chris Schmidt was impressed with his defense.
Olpe wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Ryker Windle opened the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run at the 7:26 mark of the first quarter. Just over two minutes later, Windle connected with Brecken McGuire for a 46-yard touchdown pass to extend the Eagles’ advantage to 14-0.
The Eagles added to their lead late in the first half when McGuire took a reverse and ran for a 9-yard touchdown with just 32 seconds remaining before halftime, sending Olpe into the break with a commanding 21-0 lead.
Olpe continued its offensive production in the second half. Windle and McGuire connected again on an explosive 43-yard touchdown pass with 8:04 remaining in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 28-0.
The Eagles capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter when Abbott Bailey broke through for a 13-yard touchdown run with 11:11 remaining, completing the 35-0 shutout.
Olpe finished the night with 310 yards of total offense, including 171 yards on the ground and 139 through the air. Bailey led the rushing attack with 98 yards, while Windle directed the passing game. McGuire was the Eagles’ leading receiver with 109 yards and contributed to three touchdowns, including his touchdown run on the reverse.
Defensively, Olpe turned in an impressive performance, completely shutting down the Wabaunsee offense and limiting the Chargers to just 82 total yards.
With the victory, the Eagles advance to the next round of the 1A playoffs and will travel to Rossville next week. Rossville secured its spot with a 47-13 victory over Pittsburg Colgan.
