Just after midnight Saturday the celebrating began in the city of Olpe as the state champion Olpe girls and boys basketball teams rolled into town.
The teams were welcomed back from Dodge City with a full escort from Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies and Olpe Fire crews as Olpe citizens lined the streets to celebrate historic wins Saturday.
The Eagles and Lady Eagles swept the Class 1A Division 1 state title basketball games Saturday. The Lady Eagles knocked off Norwich 42-25 to win their fourth state title. The Eagles, meanwhile, defeated previously-unbeaten South Gray 54-47 for the school’s first title in boys’ basketball.
The Eagles finished the season 18-3, while the Olpe girls finished the season 25-0. Those championships followed a successful fall season for the Olpe football team, which won the Class 1A state title.
The celebration continued from downtown Olpe to Olpe High School where both teams culminated the day by cutting down the nets of their home baskets. A schoolwide assembly is planned for 3 pm Monday to further celebrate the achievements.
