Area ag producers may have suffered some losses from the extreme cold weather from a month ago, but the losses could have been worse.
That was the assessment of Lyon County Extension ag agent Brian Rees during KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Friday. Rees says winter wheat was actually helped by ongoing dry conditions leading up to the numbing cold.
There were some livestock losses as well.
Rees says some calves could have shorter ears and tails than normal due to frostbite.
With moderate to heavy rainfall in the picture through the weekend and more rainfall possible over the next week, Rees says it’s a bit too early to start spring planting. However, he says any rainfall will help to recharge the soil profile with much of the area back in abnormally dry conditions after little precipitation so far this calendar year.
