We’re apparently on track to go from extreme fire danger to flooding in the space of two to three days.
The National Weather Service has posted flood watches for most of the KVOE listening area to close out the work week and go through at least part of the weekend. Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties are in a flood watch from 6 am Friday to 6 pm Saturday. Chase and Greenwood counties are in a separate watch from 6 pm Friday to noon Sunday.
The Weather Service anticipates anywhere from 2-4 inches of rain during the alert period.
This past week has seen an elevated to critical fire danger, thanks to warm temperatures, dry grasses, low humidity levels and high winds. The Weather Service reported a 56-mph gust at the Emporia Municipal Airport on Wednesday after noting a 51-mph gust Tuesday. New Strawn had a 44-mph gust Wednesday.
Storms Wednesday night led to several severe thunderstorm warnings but not much in the way of actual severe weather. Eureka had two reports of quarter-sized hail, with ping-pong-ball-sized hail near Fall River.
