Governor Laura Kelly is proclaiming Sunday as COVID-19 Memorial Day in Kansas.
This marks one year from the first coronavirus case noted in Kansas, a patient in Johnson County. Over the past year, there have been nearly 300,000 cases of COVID-19 in Kansas with almost 9,400 hospitalizations and better than 4,800 deaths, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
Statistics released by county health departments areawide indicate 7,800 confirmed cases over the past 12 months along with 150 deaths. Given a Census-estimated population of 78,829 residents, nearly 10 percent of area residents have contracted COVID-19 over the past year.
The first area case of COVID-19 was announced in Morris County on March 17. The first Lyon County case was announced March 22.
