The Emporia State Lady Hornets survived an ice-cold first half to hold off Central Oklahoma 82-80 in the first round of the MIAA Tournament.
ESU shot just 18 percent in the first quarter, and 33 percent for the first half. The Lady Hornets were only one of 15 from behind the arc, but managed to close a 13-point first-half deficit to 8 points by halftime.
Coach Toby Wynn said they were able to shake off a horrible-shooting first half to make a late run that carried over into the second half.
The Lady Hornets were lead by Tre’Zure Jobe with 25 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. She said they were able to fight through the first half, and the lid finally came off the basket.
Daley Handy added a double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds, adding 7 assists. Coach Wynn said she played like she didn’t it to be her last game.
Fredricka Sheats, 16 points, and Karsen Schultz, 11 points, were also in double figures for the Lady Hornets. UCO was led by Kelsey Johnson with 30 points. Emporia State improves to 18-5 and will play at Ft. Hays State, Saturday, in the semi-finals of the MIAA Tournament.
