The annual Seatbelts Are For Everyone safety initiative is underway in Lyon County.
The annual enforcement effort, organized by the Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office, focuses on increasing seatbelt usage amongst teen drivers. Education and enforcement are two of the main tools utilized by local law enforcement to accomplish this task according to Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch.
Koelsch says understanding the consequences of not buckling up before getting behind the wheel can in many cases be the difference between life and death.
Koelsch went on to say educating young drivers at an early age often means more compliance with seatbelt laws once they reach adulthood.
Alongside the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, the Emporia Police Department is also involved in the initiative.
This year’s efforts began last week and will continue through Saturday.
