Saturday’s potential for very high fire danger has prompted a burn ban for one area county.
Chase County Fire Marshal Steve Fillmore says burning will be disallowed Saturday. His decision involves high temperatures in the mid-60s, dry conditions for much of the day and wind gusts as high as 30 mph. Any decision on possibly extending the ban to Sunday would rely on the Kanas Grassland Fire Danger Index and wind speeds.
The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve successfully burned over 2,000 acres this week, but another fire Monday got out of control and burned around 600 acres before it was put out.
