Grass fire season looks like it’s picking up.
Several moderate to large-scale controlled burns took place in Lyon County and neighboring counties Thursday. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage says grass and soil conditions vary at this time.
The fire danger elevates to very high Saturday, based on projected high temperatures in the 60s, low humidity levels and southerly winds as high as 30 mph.
Steinlage reminds residents to get free burn permits — available at the Lyon County Courthouse, city clerk offices across the county and from Lyon County deputies. He also says people need to call in their burns before they start and after they finish, and they need to have ample and reliable water when they burn. People also need to monitor wind speed and direction.
