The Lyon County Emergency Communications Center is asking residents to avoid tying up phone lines and stay home with moderate snowfall, low visibility and even lower temperatures all in play Sunday.
Emergency reporting measures are currently in effect for the city of Emporia meaning if you get into an accident with no injuries and your vehicle is driveable do not call the emergency line. Instead, collect what information you need and file a report with the Emporia Police Department at your earliest convenience.
LCECC is still requesting all accidents that take place outside of the city limits within the county be reported.
The reporting measures help LCECC ensure they have responders available for “high priority calls” according to LCECC Director Roxanne Van Gundy. Van Gundy, a statement to local media, also encouraged residents to simply stay home if they do not have to be out Sunday.
Van Gundy states, “Getting out in these conditions can not only put our citizens at risk, but our field responders.” She went on to say, “If you are unable to stay home today, please allow for extra time, take precautions by having warm clothing and an emergency kit available.”
Frostbite will be a major concern with high temperatures in the low single digits and wind chill values fluctuating between -15 and -30 through the day and evening hours Sunday into the upcoming week.
