Community Development Block Grant funding is coming to Emporia to assist with a much-needed sewer maintenance project now more than a year in development.
Last spring the city applied for CDBG funding to assist with an upgrade to sanitary sewer lift station number two. Thursday afternoon it was announced the city will receive $700,000 for that work.
According to Public Works Director Dean Grant, the upgrade is needed due to the age of the station.
The estimated cost of the project is around $1.3 million with the city responsible for funding the difference of the cost not covered by the CDGB grant. According to Grant, the project is currently in the design process as is a similar project for lift station number one which is experiencing similar issues also due to age.
The grant funds will not be available for the station one project with that work costing around $1.2 million. According to city manager Mark McAnarney, the hope is to have work begin in the next three to six months, however, that timeline is tentative and subject to change.
