It may sound hard to believe, but our warmest air of the week is likely coming Wednesday and Thursday.
That “warm-up” will only take us from the low teens Tuesday to the upper teens Wednesday and Thursday before colder air comes our way for the weekend into early next week. TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers says you need to bundle up and be prepared if you’re traveling.
If you are out and about, travel conditions are actually a fair amount better than they were Monday — despite the fact the current temperatures and lack of sunshine typically make the city and county treatment materials ineffective by themselves. However, Emporia Public Works Director Dean Grant says traffic from Monday helped traffic Tuesday.
Major arterial streets are seasonal with some slick spots. Residential collector streets are seasonal to partly covered, while side streets, intersections and parking lots are covered and slick.
Highway travel so far is normal to seasonal with one exception. Kansas Highway 170 east of Reading is partly covered.
Aside from schools, the list of schedule or operation adjustments is relatively short. Click here for the KVOE.com Closings and Cancellations page.
High temperatures may only be in the single digits this weekend — with wind chills possibly at or below -15 — before slowly moderating. Light snow is also possible early Wednesday as well as Thursday morning, Friday morning and Saturday morning. Grant says Public Works will blade if needed, but any travel improvements would likely come from traffic instead of treatment materials at those temperatures.
