If you were planning to listen to the Lyon County Spelling Bee on KVOE on Tuesday, it’s coming — just not as scheduled.
Organizers made the decision to postpone the annual event if any county public school district or parochial school delayed or canceled school Tuesday. Both USD 251 North Lyon County and USD 252 Southern Lyon County announced two-hour delays Monday night for Tuesday operations.
The spelling bee, organized by Sacred Heart School, has now been tentatively moved to Thursday morning. Coverage on KVOE and KVOE.com is set for 9:45 am, with the bee set to begin at 10 am.
If there are school delays or cancellations Thursday, the bee will then move to Feb. 16.

10 am Monday: Lyon County Spelling Bee to go virtual, again airing on KVOE on Tuesday
The 2021 Lyon County Spelling Bee is coming to your airwaves Tuesday.
This year’s event is being organized by Sacred Heart Elementary, but because of coronavirus it’s taking place across the county. Principal Darby O’Neill says the goal Tuesday is to have the virtual event that resembles a normal spelling bee as best as possible.
Twenty-seven students from across the county are set to take part. With a chance of a technological glitch, students are asked to say the word before and after spelling it to make sure they heard the word correctly. If there are additional questions, spellings will be recorded for playback as needed.
Our coverage begins at 9:45 am on 14 KVOE and 96.9 FM, with the first word around 10 am. Unlike past years, where we could bring you live video coverage, organizers of the Scripps National Spelling Bee have asked for no public video “to protect the integrity” of the event. Word lists are similar if not identical this year, and national organizers say there is a chance somebody may use video to cheat the system. Sacred Heart will share the link with participating schools, who will then pass that information on to parents and family members.
