More light snow is possible and biting cold is guaranteed this week.
As expected for over a week, Arctic air is spilling south out of Canada and will affect much of the country all week. High temperatures won’t get out of the mid-20s all week. Here’s National Weather Service meteorologist Sarah Teefey:
Teefey tells KVOE News people need to limit their time outside, wear layers and cover any normally-exposed skin this week.
Besides cold air, an immediate concern Sunday morning is the seasonal driving conditions noted locally and areawide.
Downtown Emporia has scattered to widespread slick spots. Major arterials outside of downtown are more clear, while residential collector streets have isolated to scattered icy conditions and side streets have more ice on them.
Aside from Emporia, seasonal conditions are noted on most area highways including:
*Kansas Turnpike from terminal to terminal
*Interstate 35 east of Kansas Highway 130
*US Highway 50 west of Saffordville
*US Highway 56 west of Admire
*US Highway 75 from Interstate 35 to Kansas Highway 58
*Kansas Highway 177 in Chase and Morris counties
The icy conditions followed 1.4 inches of snow at the KVOE studios, just under an inch at Ninth and Lawrence and less than half an inch at the Emporia Municipal Airport. Slick conditions also led to numerous slide-off crashes and fender-benders through the day.
