Are you searching for a way to help assist youth in the local area? Then CASA of the Flint Hills is searching for you.
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is currently seeking new volunteers to help assist with local youth currently in the foster care system. CASA Director Corina Sanchez recently joined KVOE’s Morning show to discuss the need for volunteers saying the need is great at this time.
According to Sanchez, they are always in need of volunteers due to the sheer number of foster children in the local community and the fact that volunteers are only able to handle one case at a time.
Sanchez says CASA volunteers are often the one constant in each child’s life as they go through the court system. She went on to say that volunteers should understand it may take time to establish trust with the children in their charge.
CASA volunteers help to identify and provide for the needs of foster children and also communicate those needs to the courts as part of their responsibilities. Volunteers need to be at least 21 years of age and Sanchez says they would like for volunteers to be able to make a two-year commitment which is the typical length of a case.
At this time, CASA is planning to hold its next series of training for new volunteers next month, however, an exact date has yet to be announced. If you are interested in becoming a CASA volunteer call 343-2744 or visit SOSkansas.com/CASA.
