Senate Republicans are demanding a change in Governor Laura Kelly’s approach to COVID-19 vaccinations.
All 27 Republicans in the chamber voted to approve Senate Resolution 1707, which calls for the governor to push prisoners out of Phase 2 of the vaccination process and replace them with teachers and residents between ages 16-64 with severe medical risks. Republicans say the current trickle of vaccines to Kansas means it’s important to vaccinate law-abiding citizens first.
Phase 2 currently involves residents over age 65, high-contact critical workers and people in congregate settings, jails included because of the potential for rapid spread among inmates and staff alike. The governor has not indicated whether she plans to change the current approach.
